About CHOP

The Culinary Historians of the Philippines (CHOP) is a non-profit sister organization of the Culinary Historians of Washington, D.C. (CHoWDC). We are not historians in the academic or scholarly sense; we are students of culinary history who want to give back to society through culinary-based programs. Our mission: To study, promote, and help preserve the history and heritage of Philippine cuisine and culinary customs/traditions; to implement advocacy programs; and to study the cuisines of other countries. [Your comments on our posts are most welcome.]

“KUMBIRA LuzViMinda” is the catchy name of the upcoming exciting food event being organized and to be staged by CHOP member Chef Myke “Tatung” Sarthou and the “Kawali Kings” (headed by CHOP member Erwin Lizarondo), with CHOP as a participating organization. [A draft flyer is attached.]

It is an informal dinner buffet, which will showcase a great number of family heirloom recipes from around the Philippines, and all the dishes will be prepared on site by Chef Tatung himself and the Kawali Kings. This is a wonderful opportunity for you to not only savor regional family heirloom dishes, but to also learn interesting information about our country’s regional cuisine. COME HUNGRY – both for good food and for learning!

One very welcome news is that Chef Tatung and the Kawali Kings will donate to CHOP 10% of all tickets bought and sold by CHOP members, so I would encourage all of you to participate, and to also invite as many of your family and friends as you can. (I just wish I could go!!) Please identify yourself as a CHOP member when you sign in at the door, to make sure that CHOP receives the credit for your ticket(s).

Please call Chef Tatung’s Café at the numbers above for more information and directions, or visit their Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/pages/Chef-Tatung/178092915537896

("KUMBIRA" is Cebuano for a feast or banquet.)
